| Course Objectives Research projects are challenging because of their exploratory character and the special environment in which they are executed. However, dedicated methods and tools from project management enable you, regardless of your field and your position, to successfully manage the complexity of your projects in addition to your other activities like collaborating in other projects, organizing meetings, supervising students, etc. Therefore, this know-how will allow you to deliver high-quality results on time and to work in a more relaxed manner. At the end of the course, you will be able to immediately re-apply all the methods taught. The content of this course enables you to further develop your leadership skills, to initiate and coordinate projects. Such expertise is not only essential for an academic career, but also for any position in industry and the public sector. Learning Outcomes This very practical workshop will enable you: - to understand your research context - to plan all your activities while maintaining flexibility - to identify project risks and develop mitigating measures - to communicate effectively with your supervisor, project partners and other stakeholders - to guide and control your projects in a meaningful way - to write convincing proposals - to lead performing teams Contents: The following topics will be addressed: - analysis of the research environment - management of the stakeholders - project objectives - project structuring and planning (activities, people, costs) - risk management - roles and responsibilities of team members - project controlling and reporting - communication plan - project leadership | |

| To complete the course and obtain the ECTS point, the students are expected to attend both course days and participate actively during the workshop (group exercises). After the first day, participants must apply the methods taught to one of their research projects (or to a fictitious one) and submit their results as an assignment (8 hours of work). | |

| Cancellation of a course registration should be arranged with the course coordination office psc_phdprogram@ethz.ch and is possible free of charge up to 2 weeks before the course starts.
